MACTE is the international standard setting and accrediting body for Montessori teacher education. MACTE was granted initial recognition by the U.S. Department of Education in 1995, and this recognition extends through the year 2013. The Secretary of Education is required by law to publish a list of nationally recognized accrediting agencies that the Secretary determines to be reliable authorities as to the quality of education or training provided by the institutions of higher education and higher education programs.

Our mission is to improve the level of Montessori teacher education by:

  • Developing valid and reliable accreditation standards that contribute toward quality Montessori teacher education;
  • Evaluating compliance with these standards;
  • Recognizing institutions and programs that demonstrate compliance with the standards;
  • Serving as a resource to various stakeholder groups concerning quality issues in Montessori teacher education;
  • Serving as a unifying body in the field of Montessori teacher education.

The Montessori Institute of America was officially founded in 1971 under the direction of Helen K. Billings, Ph.D. Following her training in 1960 in Italy, Dr. Billings developed a course of teacher preparation in Kansas City, Missouri. That original course has served as a model for all MIA training programs. The purpose for which the Montessori Institute of America is formed is:

Fostering and encouraging the Montessori philosophy and method of education throughout the world, with particular emphasis on the trainging and certifying of Montessori classroom directors.
Establishing,granting certifications, organizing, and overseeing schools which employ the Montessori method of education.
Promoting the rights of all children everywhere to develop themselves, with guidance, through Montessori principles, according to their highest capabilities.
Providing a measure of quality control through the MIA standards; a feeling of unity, protection, and cooperation; a sharing of talents and experiences and continued professional growth for its members.
